If your DualSense controller is not connecting, is unresponsive, or is experiencing input lag, here are the most effective troubleshooting steps you can take to get it working again.
Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset on Your Controller
A hard reset on the DualSense controller typically resolves issues such as unresponsive buttons, input lag, lightbar malfunctions, or the controller not connecting properly to the console. This is the most common and effective solution for a wide range of controller issues. It will not delete any of your game saves or personal data.
- Turn off your PS5 console completely.
- On the back of the DualSense controller, locate the small, recessed reset button inside a tiny hole next to the SONY logo.
- Use a small, pointed object like a straightened paperclip or a pin to press and hold the button for at least 5 seconds.
- Once released, connect your controller to the PS5 using the USB-C cable that came with your console.
- Press the PS button on the controller. The controller should now sync with your PS5.
Step 2: Check Your USB Cable and Ports
If your controller still won't connect after a reset, the issue may be with the charging cable or the USB ports.
- Try a different USB-C cable. Not all cables can transfer data, so ensure you are using a data-compatible cable or the official one that came with the PS5.
- Try plugging the USB cable into a different port on the console (both the front and back ports) to rule out a faulty port.
- If you are using a USB hub, try connecting the controller directly to the PS5 console.
Step 3: Check for Wireless Interference
If the controller connects via the USB cable but loses connection wirelessly, there could be interference.
- Ensure there are no other wireless devices (like routers, other Bluetooth devices, or wireless headphones) positioned directly between your controller and the console. Try moving closer to the console to see if the connection improves. Temporarily turning off any nearby Bluetooth devices, such as smartphones, speakers, or other controllers, can help determine if they are the source of the interference.
Also, please be aware that physical obstructions like heavy walls or large furniture can sometimes block the signal and cause lag or disconnections.
Step 4: Check the Controller Battery
If the controller battery is very low or depleted, it may not be able to connect or respond properly.
- Fully charge the controller by leaving it connected to the console (while the console is on or in Rest Mode) for at least 30 minutes before testing it again.
Step 5: Test on Another Console or with Another Controller
To pinpoint whether the problem is with the controller itself or with your PS5 console's connection system, perform a simple test:
- Test the DualSense controller on another PS5 (if available) to see if it connects and works normally there.
- Test a different, working DualSense controller on your PS5 to see if it connects without any issues.
Step 6: Reset the Console's Bluetooth Connection
Sometimes, deleting the controller from the console’s paired devices list and re-pairing solves persistent connection issues.
- Go to Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Select the malfunctioning controller from the list.
- Press the Options button and choose Delete.
- Once deleted, follow Step 1 again to re-pair the controller using the USB-C cable.
Step 7: Update Your PS5 System Software and DualSense Controller
An outdated system software or controller firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues with your controller.
- Update PS5 System Software: If you have a second, working controller, navigate to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Select Update System Software and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Update DualSense Controller Firmware: The controller often updates automatically when it is connected to the PS5 and you update the system software. However, you can also force a check. Connect your controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. The system will typically prompt you if a controller update is available. If no prompt appears, navigate to Settings > Accessories > Controllers > Wireless Controller Device Software to check the current version and see if an update is required.
If you have tried all of these steps and your controller remains unresponsive, the issue may be a hardware defect. You may need to visit the official PlayStation support website for information on repairs or replacements.
